Keep walking. Nope, more. A little more, toward the light. It’s been so dark, your eyes had just begun to adjust, but then came the glimmer. Over the cold floor you make your way to the little bubble of warmth, if not literally, then the little sphere of relief. The dark still stretches behind you, and to the sides, as far as you can’t see. So what will you do with your discovery?
Upright
The candle comes in a small metal holder, which you could pick up and bring with you. It would not only shed light on things as you go, however limited your view, but add a little more heat to your journey. You don’t remember how you got here in the first place, or maybe you do but you aren’t thinking about it – you’re here now, either way, so might as well have a look around.
Reversed
There must be more to it, though. Something else balances on the tip of your tongue, on the tip of your brain. Decisions whisper from the dark beyond the light – so much potential, so many paths but, instead of freedom you feel pulled in several directions at once. Holding the light also has prevented your eyes from adjusting, making the dark seem so much deeper than it was before. And so, you stop walking. And sit. And you might as well be back to where you were before when you found the candle.
