Two of Cups

At the end of the bar sits two drinks. They’ve been sitting there a while, and you would know – you’ve been waiting there on your stool for someone to show up. In the quiet, you find yourself staring over to both glasses, the edges of your vision blurring out as you endure the otherwise empty room, sparkling in your periphery from streamers and other decor.

Upright

Though vastly different shapes and, judging by color, ingredients in general, both are garnished by a thin slice of orange and one bright cherry. The whiskey in the shorter glass evokes a sense of short, blunt conversation – getting to the point. The tall pink glass, however, is a bit more appetizing. A bit more fun – more relaxed. Whoever made this order probably has an interesting back-and-forth with the other.

Reversed

Your head jerks back upright. You’d nodded off, but for how long? Still mostly upright on the stool, after a cursory glance back and forth, you look back to the drinks again – one is missing. The tall, curvy pink glass leaves nothing but a thin ring of condensation on the bar, the short whiskey tumbler growing even more diluted by the minute. It could be nothing, but you can’t help but feel the shared ingredients between the two wasn’t quite enough to smooth over their differences.
