The Hermit

The field stretches onward to a line of bare trees in the distance and he stands there, up to his knees in the whispering grass. Even further, the rolling hills fade into the horizon – other houses, other farms just specks beyond. There’s no one else. In the quiet, there’s nothing but a heartbeat.

Upright

Was it all worth it? Ignoring the demands for simplicity, shooting lower? All those names and faces that presented complacency as the highest form of happiness. To some, his currently life could be described as simple and, to others, too much of a hassle. The commentary was unnecessary – alone, he drew the map. And, alone, he stood on his own land with the satisfaction of being sore at the end of the day.

Reversed

Yet, as much as he understood the misunderstandings, misinformation, and misgivings, there were still too many cups on the shelf. His fire burned bright with only shadows gathered around. They knew where he was. They knew what he was doing. They knew he was alone – and the long driveway stayed pristine. One day more than one cup would be filled at a time but, as seasons rolled on, he put off the invitation. And still wondered why no one had followed.
