Amid the lush landscape of the forest, in a small clearing still under dappled sunlight, you’ve found a ring of mushrooms. Within that ring, however, sits a deep, dark hole matching the inner contour of the rough circle. You’ve seen holes in the woods before, but none that so quickly and earnestly drop off into complete darkness. The trees still creak, and the birds still sing but…there it is.
Upright
The hole is quite wide, enough for any number of things to fit. What sits at the bottom, if there even is one? How many animals, how many objects, and which of them were surprised? Of course, it may also lead somewhere – it couldn’t have been merely an accident. Such a threshold couldn’t go unnoticed forever. The other side would be wondering, too.
Reversed
You stand there at the edge, temptation mounting. There would be no going back, most likely, in addition to not being very comfy with, not heights, but the part about falling. And plus, there’s plenty to do here, plenty to distract you and make you forget about that…very strong temptation to check it out. Or you could come back with a rope and a ladder and a – no. Then again, you’ve always been one to play it safe. You sit down, but stay near the edge, looking into the black. And your thoughts wander, to all that you might do with it, all the plans that you could make, all the ways you could live a little more…
