A light in the sky, but not the sun. Nondescript walls rise around you as a misty well, a spotlight of anxiety and confusion. Your legs, they’re somewhere, and your arms and everything else are questionable, as well. A lump in your throat wells up and a hand stretches out in front of you. Maybe it’s yours? You’ve forgotten what yours looks like. Nevertheless, a shape reaches back.
Upright
Someone is there! It doesn’t matter, whatever details in daylight would define them. They saw, they heard, they reached forward, taking the time – a moment to investigate. You may not see perfectly eye-to-eye once something is done to finally reach the mouth of the well, but they’ve made a choice you’ll never forget.
Reversed
And yet, once you clasp hands, they give a firm tug. Your feet, wherever they are, don’t feel like they’ve moved. You don’t rise, just feel the pressure pulling on your wrist, elbow, and shoulder, and then it fades away. There’s something wrong, but not from lack of trying. Their arm either isn’t strong enough, or you are, in reality, too heavy. Neither of you are suited for the task at hand, though the effort may be there. Hesitantly, that arm withdraws into the light, and silence returns. You again look to the hazy walls, and the outline of stone outcroppings begin rising from the dark as your eyes adjust.
