(The Hierophant)

Light down the hall keeps moving. It’s obviously some kind of firelight, but it jostles and bucks, almost as if it’s being fought over. On your approach, there come a few footfalls against the flagstones, and then all stills. The two figures stare you down, as well as you can tell behind their flat wooden masks. Or maybe it’s one – or not? The figure before you dances and flips with the flicker of the single match held up high.
Upright
One mask is slashed in several places, making it look a bit more like a human face, however stern. The wearer is dressed in a collared shirt, probably commercially-made, and a simple vest, which looks a little more handmade. Their right hand holds a book that appears old. Very old. In the flicker of the light, you decide it’s probably this one who currently holds the match. Once you pay more attention, the book looks quite official, too. The cover isn’t fully legible, but the letters shine faintly metallic, in neat, bold rows. If this particular figure could speak, you get the feeling it would be mainly in commands.
Reversed
The other face is still there, though. In-between momentary flashes of the other is a smooth, flat mask framed in waves of longer hair and a glimpse of pointed ears set in a dancing halo from the match stick. Their muscular shoulders are wrapped in gathered fabric and, in their left hand they hold a fountain pen with a sharp tip. If this particular figure could speak, you get the feeling it would mainly be in requests, but not quite straightforward.
