The World

The inside of this bus is oddly dark, with long shadows merging into each other over and over, enough that you sit in almost complete darkness except for a handful of stark spears of light. In your seat, you look across to the doors, halfway down the vehicle, bright spots with images sliding off to the right. And then, the bus begins to slow for the light, lurching to a stop, even if only temporary.

Upright

You stop was coming soon, but the scene out the window, framed in the battered metal trim, pulls your attention further than expected. It’s been so easy to focus on the end of your trip, only waiting until your surroundings get familiar again, you hadn’t noticed this particular house before. Surely, it was somewhere in your passing memory, but the light falls just so, and looks almost wholly unfamiliar. There’s plenty to do when you get there, but maybe – just maybe – looking out the window along the way has some less tangible benefits.

Reversed

That’s when it hits – the feeling you’ve forgotten something. Last time you were here, didn’t you have more with you? Wasn’t there more to carry, more weighing you down? Frantically, before the bus trundles forward again, you stand and look through all the seats, from all the way at the front, to the very back, and then go over each row again, this time underneath. Whatever was missing hadn’t been, well, missed, but the urgent feeling remains. As you look up through the front window, orange of construction cones and signs blaze out in the evening light, and you sigh and sit back down. You’ll get there, eventually. It might just take a while, and for you to sit with the nagging feeling there was something important.
